LaMelo Ball Injury: What It Means for Sports Betting Odds
LaMelo Ball Injury: How It Impacts Sports Betting Odds
The constant fluctuation of sports betting odds is often driven by the unpredictable impact of player injuries on team performance. A prime example of this volatility can be seen with Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball, whose absence during the first 13 games of the regular season forced bettors to constantly recalibrate their expectations. The situation became even more complex when he reinjured the same ankle while chasing a loose ball against the Indiana Pacers, injecting a wave of uncertainty into the markets and causing sudden shifts in sports betting odds across the board.

Late in the fourth quarter, Ball stepped on the foot of a fan sitting in the front row and immediately returned to the Hornets’ bench, grabbing his left ankle in pain. The training staff swiftly escorted him to the locker room.
LaMelo rolled it on a fan’s foot is what I was told,” said head coach Steve Clifford. “Hopefully, it’s not bad.”
Without Ball on the court, the Hornets’ comeback attempt fell short, resulting in a 125-113 loss. The Pacers dominated the final moments of the game with an impressive 21-9 run.
Ball finished the game with a team-high of 26 points, alongside six assists and two steals, while shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range. His performance showed he was still a key player for the Hornets.
Ball Goes Down During Home Debut
This ankle injury comes after Ball suffered a serious left ankle issue during the preseason, leading to his delayed season debut until mid-November. He played a crucial role in helping the Hornets break an eight-game losing streak in his second game back.
In the first two games following his injury, Ball averaged 16 points, but his shooting percentage was low, hitting only 20.8% from beyond the arc.
Despite these struggles, his passing ability has remained sharp, as he has averaged 7.0 assists per game since his return, including a standout performance against the Orlando Magic where he recorded nine assists.
Lastly, Ball made his highly anticipated home debut where he received a warm standing ovation from the Spectrum Center crowd.
The Hornets drafted Ball third overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, where he won the Rookie of the Year award in the 2020-21 season, averaging 15.7 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds. In his second season, he earned All-Star honors with averages of 20.1 points, 7.6 assists, and 6.7 rebounds.
Injury Woes Continue for the Hornets
The Hornets have faced significant injuries this season. Along with Ball, small forward Gordon Hayward has missed several games due to a shoulder injury and knee contusion, while Cody Martin has been sidelined following knee surgery.
Point guard Dennis Smith, who displayed great potential while filling in for Ball, has also been plagued by injury, while shooting guard Terry Rozier missed multiple games due to a sprain.
“It’s very tough but we have to be professionals about it,” stated Kelly Oubre, one of the few starters to play in all games this season. “Injuries are part of the game and we must step up.”
The Hornets’ developmental team hasn’t been spared either, with center Mark Williams twisting his ankle while with the Greensboro Swarm.
Current Season Outlook
As of now, the Hornets have played just 16 games, with a current record of 4-12, including 1-6 at home. They rank among the bottom teams for betting this season with a 6-10 ATS record.
In the Eastern Conference, the Hornets sit at the bottom alongside the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons, all in contention for the first overall pick in the upcoming draft.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards, and Miami Heat scramble for the Southeast Division title, while the Hornets aim to redeem themselves from their last-place struggles.
The Hornets are currently long shots to win the Southeast Division at +15,000 and even bigger underdogs to claim the 2023 NBA championship with +80,000 odds.
Though this has been a challenging season marred with injuries, the resilience displayed by players and the enthusiasm of the fans will hopefully guide the Hornets back to form. It’s important to keep supporting our players as they recover and look ahead to better games ahead.
